So, you have found a few therapists in the Metro Atlanta Area who seemed nice enough. All of them offer a free consultation, but what should you say? What questions should you ask? What is appropriate?

Questions to ask a Therapist in Atlanta

Asking questions might be uncomfortable, especially if you are not used to having a voice in your relationships. It’s okay. Therapy is for YOU! Just be sure you don’t go over the time the therapist has set aside for you. And the therapist might also have some questions for you too.

Now it is time to find out if those therapists are a good fit for you. Here are a few questions you might want to ask a potential new therapist in Atlanta. You might even be able to find some of this information on their website, so be sure to check there too.

Question #1: Do you have experience working with the issues I am looking for help with?

Although a professional license opens the doors for a therapist or counselor to treat a wide range of issues every therapist may not have experience working with what you are looking to address. Asking about their experience working with what you are looking to address will help to ensure they are a good fit.

Question #2: Do you have additional training with the issues I am looking for help with?

Some challenges you might be facing might be more sooted by someone with some additional training in that area. Most of my clients have been those struggling with trauma and attachment or relationship challenges. So, I am always looking for new training in these areas. Training on treating something unrelated to these issues might not catch my overall attention as much.

Question #3: What does a typical therapy session look like?

If this is your first time in therapy, you might want to know what therapy looks like. Will each session pick up from where the last one left off? Do we chat for a few minutes or dive right into the issues?

Question #4: How can I tell if the therapy is working?

Therapy can be very emotionally draining. It can be challenging for you to see the progress while you are still in the mud. So, you might not feel like you are making progress. The counselor or therapist should be able to tell you how you will know if treatment is working.

Question #5: How do you gauge therapy progress?

Unless you are facing a challenge that is lifelong, your treatment should be driven with the ultimate goal for you to not need therapy anymore. So, ask that potential new therapist how they track the progress you are making.

Question #6: What if the therapy approach doesn’t work?

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to treating trauma-related challenges. Some methods may not work for you so it’s helpful to know how you can move forward if things are not working.
